Belarus State University.

Belarus State University is the largest centre of education, science and culture, the leader of higher school of the Republic of Belarus. It was founded on October 30, 1921 and at present has got over 14.000 students. Its Academic staff includes 1.400 highly qualified specialists, 900 having scientific degrees.

There are the following faculties: Biology, Geography, Journalism, History, International Relations, Mechanics-Mathematics, Applied Mathematics and Computer Science, Radiophysics and Electronics, Physics, Philology, Philosophy-Economics, Chemistry, Law, Business and Information Technologies, Refreshment Courses in Computer Science, Preparatory.

In addition there are 12 general university departments and 3 Scientific- Research Institutes within its structure.

Students can display their creative abilities in different amateur artistic groups (dancing, theatre, etc.) The University Sporting complex that contains a stadium, a pool, a sauna, gymnasiums and different sporting sections can satisfy not only beginners, but also skilled athletes.

Our Faculty.

The faculty of Applied Mathematics and computer science was founded on April 1, 1970. Its academic staff of 115 teachers trains more than 1.000 students at 11 departments. There are also 6 scientific research laboratories.

The faculty was established according to the order of the rector of university academician A.N.Savchenko on the basis of three departments: Computional Mathematics, Applied Mathematics and Differential Equations. The dean of the faculty from the date of its foundation till 1931 was professor F.A.Ivanov. Famous mathematicians the academicians N.P.Erugin and V.I.Krylov have played a great role in organization and development of the faculty.

In 60-70ths similar faculties ware created in other leading universities of the former Soviet Union (Moscow, Leningrad, Novosibirsk, Kiev and others) according to the needs of a national economy to train principally new specialists-applied mathematicians, who could use mathematical methods and computer technologies on a high professional level. Till 1993 the faculty was known as a Faculty of Applied Mathematics. The renaming of the faculty was connected with the introduction of new specialities and specializations.

The Faculty of Applied Mathematics and Computer Science works in close cooperation with a Special Faculty of Business and information Technologies and Refreshment Courses in Computer Sciences.

Specialities.

The course of training (five years) at the faculty is carried out according to the following specialities:

The Graduates of the Faculty receive qualification according to the profile of their speciality, enabling them to conduct research, analytical and organizational-administrative activity. Having taken additional pedagogical training and practice, graduates of the Faculty of Applied Mathematics and Computer Science can work as teachers of mathematics and computer science. First and second year students of all specialities take general mathematics and programming courses (Mathematical Analysis, Geometry and Algebra, Differential Equations, Computers and Programming Computer Practice, etc.) Specialization begins in the third year.

Departments of the Faculty.

The Department of Computational Mathematics is the oldest one and it was founded in 1957.

It deals with scientific directions:
Construction, research and application of methods of numerical analysis of differential equations;
Numerical research of problems of hydrodynamics and development of physical- mathematical models.

The Department of Methods of Optimal Control appeared in 1996. It is interested in qualitative methods of research of stability and optimality of dynamic systems and application of mathematical methods of optimization problems research to problems of economics.

The Department of Mathematical Physics dates back to 1970. Its scientific directions include mathematical modeling of problems in microelectronic studies of boundary value problems for linear equations with partial derivatives and others.

The Department of Higher Mathematics founded a year later (1971), studies differential equations, algebra and geometry.

The Department of Information Management System founded in 1971 too concentrates on mathematical models and methods in information management, natural language text processing and intelligent information systems design using data and knowledge bases.

The Department of Information and Program-Mathematical Software of Automated Productions (1973) develops methods and algorithms for mathematical modeling of problem-oriented systems.

The Department of Theory of Probabilities and Mathematical Statistics (1974) focuses on actuarial mathematics, software eligibility. There is a Research Laboratory of Applied Probability Analysis at the department.

The Department of Mathematical Problems of Computer-Aided Design appeared only 10 years ago. In 1986 and is connected with discrete optimization, computer graphics and development of mathematical methods and software for optimal decision-making in economic and design of microelectronics.

The Department of Mathematical Modeling and Data Analysis founded in 1988 is associated with scientific directions: mathematical and applied statistics, econometrics and mathematical economics, computer data analysis and forecasting.

The Department of Technology of Programming (1991) studies the Theory of programming and software engineering, software of high-duty computing systems, information systems and expert training.

Student's Life.

Students spend a significant part of their life in classrooms and at the same time they find time for scientific work, participate in solution of urgent applied problems and development of the applied software. Three student scientific laboratories are found at the Faculty, student scientific conferences are annually held. The students of the Faculty of Applied Mathematics and Computer Science were winners of international contests on computer science a great number of times.
